Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) Pathway
Specialist online physiotherapy for people with FND
Gentle, supportive movement retraining — delivered 1:1 online by an experienced neurological physiotherapist.
If you are living with Functional Neurological Disorder and movement feels unpredictable, unsafe, or exhausting, you are not alone.
This online FND Pathway is designed to help you regain confidence in movement, reduce symptoms, and feel more in control of your body again.
Is this for you?
This pathway may be helpful if you:
-
Have a diagnosis of Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)
-
Experience movement symptoms such as weakness, tremor, gait changes, or abnormal movements
-
Feel anxious, stuck, or unsure how to move safely
-
Have tried physiotherapy before but felt it didn’t address FND specifically
-
Want gentle, specialist guidance, not pressure to “push through” symptoms

You do not need to be symptom-free, confident, or fully understand FND to start.
A different approach to physiotherapy for FND
FND is not caused by damage to the brain or nerves. Instead, it involves a problem with how the nervous system is functioning and communicating.
This means recovery focuses less on strength or fitness — and more on retraining automatic movement, attention, and expectation.

This pathway is not about forcing movement or ignoring symptoms.
It is about helping your nervous system feel safe enough to move again.
How the FND Pathway works
The FND Pathway is a short, structured programme combining education, movement retraining, and personalised support.

What’s included:
-
4 x 1:1 online physiotherapy sessions
-
A guided FND workbook, worked through together
-
Individualised strategies tailored to your symptoms
-
Support to understand flare-ups and setbacks
-
A focus on confidence, control, and long-term self-management
Sessions are delivered online, allowing you to work from a familiar, safe environment.
What we focus on in sessions
Each pathway is personalised, but may include work on:

-
Understanding why symptoms happen (without blame or judgement)
-
Reducing fear and over-attention to movement
-
Retraining automatic movement patterns
-
Managing tremor, weakness, gait changes, or fatigue
-
Reducing secondary problems such as deconditioning or pain
-
Learning pacing strategies to avoid boom-and-bust cycles
-
Building confidence in everyday activities

You are guided at your own pace. There is no “one size fits all” approach.
What this pathway is not
To be clear, this pathway is not:

-
A fitness or exercise programme
-
A requirement to push through symptoms
-
A suggestion that symptoms are “all in your head”
-
A guarantee of immediate symptom resolution

Recovery with FND is individual. Progress is often gradual — but meaningful.

I initially booked the 5 online sessions which helped with my understanding of FND in general and my own personal symptoms. Compared to other professionals I’ve seen Josie understood the importance of building trust and due to her kindness and patience I have felt safe with her. Because of this I chose to continue having physio sessions with her and I have been continuously improving.
